Young Artists 2015

Take 23 young visual artists and two artist groups. Hang their works in Helsinki’s Kunsthalle in a mix of fashion and snapshot aesthetics, graphite used in the nuclear industry, tree-hugging, as well as societal commentaries such as criticism towards the treatment of asylum seekers. Organise a fossil chase and host performances. These are the pieces that come together in the Young Artists 2015 exhibition.

Produced by the Artists’ Association of Finland, the Young Artists 2015 exhibition is an institution of Finnish visual arts. Organised every two years to showcase fresh and interesting visual arts, the exhibition has followed the same guidelines since 1939: new works not more than three years old by Finnish or international visual artists residing in Finland under 35 years of age.

The Young Artists exhibition has been a breakthrough step for many currently well-known artists. Participants in the 2000’s have included, e.g. Ville Andersson, Jasmin Anoschkin, Pirjetta Brander, Samuli Heimonen, Anssi Kasitonni and Tommi Toija.

The curation is based on an open call and was led by a jury of three experts. The jury members are chairperson, painter Rauha Mäkilä, and two members representing visual arts students: Kati Roover from the Academy of Fine Arts at Helsinki’s University of the Arts, and Kasperi Mäki-Reinikka from the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

The exhibition includes installations, paintings, photography, video art and a sound piece. Jury chair Rauha Mäkilä comments that the exhibition is a multi-faceted, current cross-section of how young artists experience the contemporary world.

The featured artists are: Kristoffer Ala-Ketola, Crystal Bennes, Andrey Bogush, Ilari Hautamäki, Viljami Heinonen, Hemuloordi, Noora Isoeskeli, Minna Kallinen, Jonna Kina, Anna Knappe, Sara Kovamäki, Jaakko Leeve, Katri Mononen, Erica Nyholm, Sofia Okkonen, Tuomo Rainio, Joakim Pusenius, Jonna Rutanen, Nastja Säde Rönkkö, Kaarlo Stauffer, Pinja Valja, Nita Vera and Bogna Wisniewska, as well as the artist groups Akuliina Niemi, Felicia Honkasalo & Sinna Virtanen and Olento.

The Young Artists exhibition is also a popular event for purchasing art for art collections, private collectors and art enthusiasts alike. This year’s pieces are also available for purchase.
