How can a site-specific exhibition emerge through a dialogue between architecture, natural light and materials? And how can cultural memory, craft traditions and the movement of materials become starting points for contemporary artistic practice?

In this Professional Talk for visual arts professionals, Alia Ali discusses the artistic premises of In Light of…, her working processes and her approach to materials.

Created specifically for Kunsthalle Helsinki, the exhibition brings together textiles, photography, sculpture, moving image and wall paintings. The exhibition has been conceived for the galleries of Kunsthalle Helsinki, with the building’s natural light, windows, staircases and views actively shaping the experience of the works.

The discussion will delve into Ali’s artistic practice and some of the exhibition’s central questions: the limits of language and visual expression, the cultural memory carried by textiles, and the movement of materials, craft traditions and visual cultures across borders. In Ali’s practice, centuries-old craft techniques also meet contemporary technologies and materials that look towards possible futures.

The Professional Talk offers visual arts professionals an opportunity to consider the exhibition from the perspective of artistic practice and to discuss Ali’s processes and the contexts behind the works directly with the artist.
