Spoken word at Kunsthalle Helsinki: Youth Open Mic

Helsinki Day, 12 June 2023 from 5 to 7 pm

In collaboration with Kunsthalle Helsinki, the Youth Open Mic collective’s spoken word event sets a stage for an unforgettable evening that also encourages the audience to take part. The poetry evening is a meeting point for texts and the art of Saara Ekström.

Aimed at young people between the ages of 13 and 23, the event is open to all kinds of artists working through words from rappers to musicians, spoken word artists, and poets. Come with an open heart.

The evening will be opened by the charismatic young performers Ranja Omaheimo and Aino Kontinen. After the initial performances, the stage will open for the audience to take the mic and recite their own texts within the caress of Saara Ekström’s art, a sensitive world observing memory and time.

While the open mic is limited to young performers, we warmly welcome everyone to enjoy tomorrow’s poetry.

The evening is curated by the event producers Natalia Karjalainen, Aura Nurmi and Marjuli Heliö.

The event will be held in Finnish and English. Performances in all languages are welcome.
While not necessary, performers can also pre-register for the open mic via e-mail: nuortenopenmic@gmail.com

The open mic event is part of the Helsinki Day programme. Free entry.
The City of Helsinki awarded the Youth Open Mic events with an honourable mention in the Helsinki Cultural Act Awards 2022. The evening is supported by the Otava Book Foundation.
